(Red) Infrared Portraits

Photographing the Invisible

(Red) Infrared Portraits

Photography has always been associated with truth.

We trust photographs because they appear to show us reality exactly as it exists.

Yet cameras have always seen more than we do.

(Red) Infrared Portraits

Infrared photography records wavelengths of light beyond human vision, revealing a world that exists continuously around us but remains invisible to our eyes. Trees glow. Skin changes. Textures transform. Familiar landscapes become unfamiliar.

This hidden spectrum became the inspiration for Red.

Rather than using infrared purely for novelty, the project explores perception itself. If our cameras reveal realities that our eyes cannot perceive, how certain can we ever be that our own understanding of the world is complete?

Portraiture becomes particularly fascinating within this context. Human skin reflects infrared light differently from visible light, producing subtle transformations that make faces appear simultaneously familiar and otherworldly. The result is neither fantasy nor documentary but something suspended between both.

The title references both infrared light and the symbolic associations of the colour red. Passion, danger, mystery and hidden energy all resonate with the project's central theme: that reality extends beyond immediate perception.

Technically, creating infrared portraits requires abandoning many of the assumptions built into conventional photography. Focus shifts. Exposure changes. Colours behave unpredictably before conversion. Every image becomes an act of exploration rather than routine.

Red is ultimately about curiosity. It reminds us that the world contains far more than we can see and that photography, at its best, allows us to experience realities that would otherwise remain hidden.
